Background

The Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven (“Federation”) is an integrated Federation which includes an active Jewish Community Center (“JCC”). The Federation is committed to taking care of the needs of the Jewish people in Greater New Haven, Israel and worldwide. The Federation and its community partners offer a wide variety of programs and services for people of all ages. The C-Suite includes the JCC Executive Director, Chief Development Officer and the Chief Financial Officer.

In addition to the Federation, the New Haven Jewish community also includes, as a separate corporate entity, the Jewish Foundation of Greater New Haven (the “Foundation”), a $70 million endowment fund, that provides additional support to the community. The Foundation is separately incorporated, led by an Executive Director, and governed by a separate Board of Directors.

The Federation is in a building designed in the early 1990s and recently updated with new fitness and art spaces, classrooms, and campus wide security. The overall campus covers 55 acres of wooded space and includes a day camp with an outdoor pool, playgrounds for the childcare center and afterschool programs, and recreation areas.

Greater New Haven boasts a strong Jewish community that is deeply integrated into New Haven as well as its surrounding towns. Greater New Haven is bursting with innovation, from its diverse, highly productive workforce to its plentiful artistic, education and cultural opportunities, to its growing tech, healthcare and life sciences industries. New Haven is home to Yale University and its rich academic community. The New Haven area is known for art galleries, museums, theaters and is a culinary destination drawing visitors from around the state and southern New England. There are wonderful outdoor recreation opportunities in the area as well.

The Federation and JCC offer an array of programs from early childhood, such as the Beverly Levy Childcare Center, Shalom Baby and the PJ Library, to older children, teens, and adults, including sports, fitness and Jewish cultural programs. There is a wide variety of synagogues, day schools, and many opportunities to engage Jewishly. The Greater New Haven catchment area is over 50 miles and stretches from Madison to Milford on the shoreline and from Woodbridge, Orange and Bethany to Cheshire and North Haven inland. New Haven is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Boston and a ninety minute drive to New York City, on average.

Position Summary

The Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven is seeking a dynamic executive with strong fundraising, strategic leadership, and community building skills to serve as its Chief Executive Officer. The successful candidate will be a proven and visionary leader who can work collaboratively within the community, with donors, agency leaders, clergy, Board members, lay leaders, staff, volunteers, etc. This individual must be able to collaborate, mediate, and build consensus.

As a thoughtful leader who is driven by innovation and creativity, the ideal candidate will thrive in bringing constituents together, engaging multiple perspectives, aligning mission and strategy around common goals, and translating mission and strategy into action through successful execution.

Reporting to the Board, the CEO will play the lead role in articulating a vision for the Jewish community that will excite and engage the public. Critical to the future, and working in partnership with the Chief Development Officer, the CEO will guide the successful identification, cultivation and stewardship of new donors, identification of other sources of financial support including grants, government support and corporate sponsorships, and the creation of opportunities for new leadership to emerge. The CEO will serve as the voice of the Jewish community to the public.

Responsibilities

  • Run the day-to-day affairs of a dynamic ~$10 million/year organization, including overseeing all staff.
  • Collaborate with the Board, partner agencies, and congregations to foster strong relationships, drive shared goals and maximize Guide leadership to develop a clear vision and mission of the Federation that engages and excites the community. Develop and maintain strong relationships with constituent agencies and Jewish institutional stakeholders.
  • Inspire and motivate the staff to enhance the operation of the Federation and the JCC in collaboration with the JCC Executive Director; recruit train, supervise and evaluate a staff that can effectively carry out its
  • Ensure Federation’s mission and funding objectives, policies and programs are effectively developed and articulated to the Jewish and general
  • Cultivate, recruit, develop and maintain effective relationships with top volunteer leadership and prospects.
  • Working closely with the CFO and volunteer leadership, take fiscal responsibility for the Federation including ongoing oversight of the Federation budget and other financial resources that are disbursed by the
  • In collaboration with the CDO, lead and manage the development of strategies for cultivating relationships with major supporters of the Federation and in partnership with the Jewish Foundation ED, encourage next generation donors, planned-giving and endowment prospects and
  • In partnership with the Board, develop integrated community planning efforts that support the mission of the Federation, particularly the development of short and long-term strategies to maintain a vibrant
  • Engage in community relations through organizational and professional networks and relationships.
  • Develop and steward respectful and collaborative relationships with congregational clergy and leadership.
  • The CEO will serve as the Federation liaison with the separate and supporting organization, the Jewish Foundation

Qualifications 

  • Ability to translate vision into objectives, strategies activities and
  • Successful track record for leadership, including the management of staff, volunteers, and financial management of a complex
  • Ability to develop and steward trusted relationships with donors and prospects positioning the Federation as the venue for fulfilling their philanthropic objectives. A proven record of fundraising, including planning, donor prospecting, solicitation, and recognition
  • Ability to connect with and understand people of diverse socioeconomic, ethnic/racial, and cultural backgrounds and build rapport with those who have varying viewpoints and
  • An entrepreneurial spirit who pursues, cultivates, and enjoys building and maintaining strong and authentic donor and stakeholder
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including the ability to engage in difficult but critical conversations, are necessary for success in this
  • A strong commitment to Judaism, the Jewish people, and the welfare of the State of Israel; including an understanding of the issues of Jewish life locally, nationally, and
  • Ability to inspire, lead, grow, and empower the staff and a dedicated, committed Board and lay leadership is required. Integrity, strategic thinking, critical inquiry, time and people management, and sound judgment are essential to success in this
  • BA Degree required (MA preferred)
  • At least 6 years progressively responsible experience in Jewish communal or similar

Compensation

The salary range is $175,000 – $200,000 plus comprehensive benefits.
