Last month, Sageview’s Vice President of Talent Acquisition, Carin Maher traveled as a Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) Ambassador to Minsk, Belarus and Tbilisi, Georgia in the former Soviet Union (FSU) to get an in-depth look at JDC’s work caring for the region’s elderly Jews and rebuilding Jewish communities.  Carin, who personally works with her Jewish community and has worked in various Jewish organizations, also has a personal connection to the JDC, as her grandmother’s family was rescued by the organization after they escaped the Ukraine in 1920.  The JDC was able to bring them to New York in 1921 so this trip held some very meaningful family connections for her.

During her experience as an Ambassador in both Minsk and Tblisi, Carin went on home visits to JDC clients, met with local community volunteers, toured both cities and spent time with elderly Jews that receive support from the JDC.  Throughout the home visits, time spent with JDC clients, museum and city tours, and moments getting to speak with local community leaders and volunteers, Ambassadors were able to experience how local communities empower and support their Jewish elderly, as well as see firsthand how JDC is revitalizing Jewish life in the FSU.

“I am truly honored to have made this trip. It was an amazing journey to see what life is now like for Jews in the FSU and the work of the JDC”, shared Carin Maher.

The JDC is the leading Jewish humanitarian organization, working in 70 countries to lift lives and strengthen communities.  They rescue Jews in danger, provide aid to vulnerable Jews, develop innovative solutions to Israel’s most complex social challenges, cultivates a Jewish future, and leads the Jewish community’s response to crises. Sageview supports their teams taking part in programs like this, as they bring enhanced understanding of Jewish communal life both at home and abroad and the important work of the organizations that provide programs and services to the Jewish people wherever they may live.
